Piaui is the state with the lower stretch of coast: there are only 66 km. This small stretch, however, is favored by the best conditions for wind sports such as kite surfing. It also has the Delta do Rio Parnaíba (the only one in the open sea of the Americas) with numerous islands, lagoons, streams and beaches of fine sand, taken by dunes and coconut trees. Its capital Teresina, at the river of Rio Parnaíba (River), is the only northeastern capital that is not located on the coast and this is due of the colonization.
Unlike the rest of the Northeast, the state was engaged from the interior to the coast.
In the southeast, the archeological sites of the National Park of Serra da Capivara considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO, prove that the man appeared on the American continent for longer than previously thought.
